We place great importance on fostering children's interest and talent in the Performing Arts and they are an integral part of the school timetable. Pupils of all abilities are given every encouragement to realise their potential and to develop cultural awareness.
St Margaret's has a flourishing Music Department and an award-winning Chamber Choir. We employ specialist music staff to offer tuition in all orchestral instruments, piano, electric keyboard, guitar, percussion and also solo singing.
A specialist drama teacher provides tuition in Speech & Drama to children throughout the school and there are a number of major productions and concerts each year.
St Margaret’s has a thriving Music Department. There are four choirs (Pre-Prep, Prep, Community and a Chamber Choir), various woodwind and string ensembles, a school orchestra, samba band and rock groups. All children throughout the school receive two class music lessons per week. The children perform regularly both in school and at local venues in the town, in addition to entering nationally organised competitions such as the Devizes Eisteddfod and Swindon Music Festival. In 2016 the St Margaret’s Chamber Choir was recognised as ‘Wiltshire Choir of the Year’.
We arrange informal concerts throughout the year for children of all ages and abilities and there are two evening concerts in the Spring term and a Carol Service at Christmas which demonstrates the diverse talents of our children. Individual music lessons are available in a wide range of subjects and some lessons can be taken in a pair or trio. Music lessons incur an additional charge and this is invoiced on a termly basis.
The following lessons are available to children from Year 1:
The children are entered for music examinations at all the recognised music schools – The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music, London College of Music and Trinity Guildhall.
Specialist tuition in Speech & Drama is available to children throughout the school. Our children are encouraged to participate both in school and in classes at local festivals and have enjoyed considerable success.
During the year we work with the children to produce a number of productions. In the autumn term, the children in Kindergarten and Reception prepare for their Nativity, whilst those in Year 1 and 2 work towards their Christmas production. The Year 3 and 4 children present their Pantomime in the Spring term and the children in Years 5 and 6 complete the year with a vibrant musical production in the Summer!
Children taking Speech & Drama tuition are also prepared for LAMDA examinations.
